M. Porcius Cato
NYC-area theatre-goers have a chance to see not one, but two, plays on the man who destroyed the last pagan republic. The first, "Caesar and Cleopatra," is the seldom-produced play written by the Caesar-worshipping George Bernard Shaw (also author of "The Thinking Woman's Guide to Socialism"). If the play is as awful as the movie with Vivien Leigh, I'm sure New Yorkers will do the right thing: stab Caesar, so they can go home. On the other hand, if the play is great, I hope it tours Detroit, where the effect will be the same: Caesar (and the rest of the cast) likely stab victims. Speaking of stabbing, the second play, "23 Knives", looks much more fun, a mystery about the "glorious banquet" on the Ideas. It's a whodunnit, which I thought was already known, but with classical education down, maybe not. Full story in The Gray Lady. Edited January 29, 2009 by M. No no, our new specialty is putting people on ice... stabbing is far too barbaric. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic...TRO08/901290400 http://www.mlive.com/news/bay-city/index.s..._froze_ins.html
Nephele
Thanks for two more intriguing theater recommendations, MPC! I had taken your recommendation and gone to see Conversations in Tusculum last spring, and I was not disappointed, as you can see by my review here. -- Nephele EDIT: I just now saw those links, PP. Yikes. Although, I imagine our MPC would approve of similarly "icing" Caesar.
M. Porcius Cato
Yes, I was terribly upset I wasn't able to catch Conversations in Tusculum. Your detailed review (and Playbill!), Nephele, was as lovely a consolation as I'd dare hope for. And, yes, I'm buttering you up so that if you see 23 Knives, you'll share your impressions! Here's the question I'd go in asking: Do they really think that 23 knife wounds implies 23 knives??

One could probably expect it to be very loosely based on actual events (as we know them of course)

And, yes, I'm buttering you up so that if you see 23 Knives, you'll share your impressions! I've already ordered tickets. (For a mere $18 per ticket, who could resist?) I'll be going not this Saturday, but next. I'll also snag an extra playbill for you again, MPC. Here's the question I'd go in asking: Do they really think that 23 knife wounds implies 23 knives?? Ha! Good question! -- Nephele
