spittle
Hans Zimmer as been recycling the same music for around 15 yrs. Ancient Rome or Piratical high sea's its just the same old homogenised stuff. A group also contributed to Gladiator, thankfully.

Was Zimmer also responsible for that weird Holstian rip-off in one of the arena scenes? If so he should really consider retirement.
caldrail
Why? He's a succesful music director in the film industry. He doesn't write music to be original or clever, he writes it to set the required mood and pace within the film (arguably harder because you don't have creative freedom). If you watch the DVD interview, he does actually mention being forced to resort to wagnerian symphonies during Commodus Triumphal return to Rome because nothing else would do. And its also thanks to him that the vocals and duduk addition to the soundtrack happened at all, which really does underpin the films tragic story. Long may he continue. Maladict
He doesn't write music to be original or clever, he writes it to set the required mood and pace within the film Maybe so, but he let himself get dangerously close to plagiarism in that one scene I mentioned. I don't think he intended the audience to be thinking about that while watching the movie. The other stuff doesn't bother me as much because, as you say, it does the job it was made for.
