longshotgene
Does anyone know if the Macedonian Phalangites carried shields or just spears. I have seen images showing both, but I am curious if anyone has any hard evidence?
Kosmo
In the begining they did not. Possiblly they had a peltas when acting like peltasts. Later the veterans got a silver shield becaming the famous argyraspides that were thought of by the diadohi.
Rameses the Great
Some did and I guess some did not. They usually had a circular shield, as most Greeks did, and I believe strapped it to their arm opposite the spear. The guys should get to you soon on that. DecimusCaesar
The Macedonian Pezhetairoi (phalangites) often had a small or medium shield when in battle. The shield was strapped to the arm and a leather strap was placed around the neck or shoulders for support. They did not carry their shields in the same style as the Roman legionaries - that is, in their hands.
