Up Pompeii

In the past I've watched a few episodes of the Frankie Howard comedy series "Up Pompey", and I was wondering what everyone else thought of the series? :lightbulb: .

You see, a few years ago I started a collection of books, films and T.V. programmes that were set in ancient Rome, because it's my favorite era of history. You know the sort of thing "Carry On Cleo", "I, Claudius", "Rome" etc ;) .

Anyway, I was curious if "Up Pompey" was rated very highly amongst you guys?, I'd love to hear your views on the subject  or :naughty: .

Incidentily, does anyone remember a series called "Chelmsford 123" they used to show on UK Gold a long time ago?, it was a comedy show based on the Roman occupation.

Up Pompey was great. It poked fun at all the publically held misconceptions of the Roman period, as well as presenting us with a lot of silly names ending in 'US'. Chelmsford 123 was even better - it also had a modicum of authenticity, although for me this was incidental. I have been trying to get this series on DVD for ages, but cant find it. It never seems to get repeated, either.

"Titter ye not!". Up Pompeii was a great series but quite camp. It was watched by millions and really made Frankie Howard the household name he became. He was already popular with the women even though he was gay. But none of that mattered then or now. Another great comedian of his time.

Chelmsford123 was excellent and I never even gave this a thought when looking for DVD's etc. Maybe I should give this a shot. If I find it NN I'll let you know!! Certain programmes from the past cannot be sold or repeated because of complicated contracts but whether this one is part of that I do not know.

My memory must be fuzzy -- I just realized that line came from Carry On Cleo. D'uh! But I'm positive I remember hearing Frankie Howard responding to an over-the-top soothsayer ("Oh, woe! Oh, woe! Oh woe!") with: "Oh, woe away!"

Great series, Up Pompeii. And I think Carry On Cleo was the best of the Carry Ons.

The Prologue....... Good old Lurcio and pretty Nauseus writing his odes.....

Yep - 'Up, Pompeii' was gorgeous, silly fun and didn't even take itself seriously, let alone Roman history. You knew where you stood with it! Darling Frankie - he is much missed. I think it was meant to be a sort of pastiche of Plautus.

I only saw a couple of episodes of Chelmsford - wasn't it in Latin with subtitles half the time? I would love to find it on DVD.

There was a documentary on a Sky channel a few months ago called '50 years of Togas on TV' or something like that, in which all these lovely things were given an airing again.

I've only watched the first two episodes of 'Up Pompeii", and have concluded that I hate, hate ,hate you Brits! Now I must have the DVD. I'll bet that couldn't be shown on US TV today. What does two 'V's' mean. Wasn't that Mr. Rumbold in the conspiracy scene? That is some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. My Lord Pertinax, can you put up Chelmsford 123 and Carry on Cleo or any other spoofs? How do you spell Titia, with one or two T's? Is Sophia, Ludicrous wife? No one does it near as good as you Brits do!

Thanks for the link Pertinax, Frankie Howard is a comedy genius.

Don't suppose you've got a link for the Chelmsford series have you? To be honest I'd never even heard of this before now and wouldn't mind watching it.

As an addition to the above... here's a link to YouTube for a clip on Chelmsford123.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RolAzUgbutk...ted&search=

There are several others to be seen also but this is 3.17minutes in length and is very funny!!

It seems to me that the DVD's are not available as there is no link to buy them on Play.com..... I'll search around and see what I come up with.
