GhostOfClayton
Hmm - I'm going to guess that the gegraphical characteristic is that Serbia is landlocked. The only other landlocked Balkan State is Macedonia (assuming we're not counting Hungary as a Balkan State), so my guess to the country os Macedonia. Is the answer we're looking for Ohrid? Bryaxis Hecatee
The logical process of identification of the country was the right one, and we're indeed in the FYROM, also know as Macedonia. But the city is not Ohrid
GhostOfClayton
OK - then if it isn't Heraklea Lynkestis, I will eat my hat!
Bryaxis Hecatee
Let your hat rest then, for it is indeed the site of Heraklea Lynkestis, with it's two roman basilicas, it's hadrianic theater, it's thermae and it's episcopal palace, visibles in the modern macedonian city of Bitola, a place to visit when you go along the Via Egnatia. GhostOfClayton
In that case, I'll enjoy a Spiced Dahl Soup instead. Delicious! While I'm enjoying that, I'll let you enjoy the next Ancient City. This will go really quickly - it's just an excuse to show you this wonderful photo: As a clue - Crispina is probably best placed among you to get this one. ummidia quadratilla
Is it Palmyra?
Bryaxis Hecatee
Wonderfull city ! But I hesitate between Ummidia Quadratilla's Palmyra and the other syrian beauty, Apamea. Since the first has already been suggested I will say Apamea (although I believe Ummidia won this round )
GhostOfClayton
It is indeed Palmyra (setting for the last part of the Marcus Didius Falco novel 'Last Act in Palmyra') - well done, and over to you, Ummidia.
ummidia quadratilla
Palmyra looks stunning. I would like to get there one day. In January I was contemplating a tour of Jordan and Syria offered through our university for this October but soon after the events in Tunisia and Egypt it became clear this might not be the year to visit the region and unfortunately it has turned out to be too true, especially for Syria. Here is my photo for your guesses:

ummidia quadratilla
No it's not Aphrodisias but you are very close. I'm amazed that you can tell the landscape looks Turkish from that picture.

ummidia quadratilla
No it's not Antioch on the Maeander. Look closer to the coast.
