WotWotius
Last night, my friends and I were discussing our favourite guitarists of all time. After much careful thought, I concluded that mine was Steve Howe; Mood for a Day was the song that got me learning guitar: Steve Howe My second choice would have to be Jimmy Page (for obvious reasons). I was wondering if anybody else had any thoughts on the matter? Edited December 23, 2006 by WotWotius
docoflove1974
Depending on the type of music being played, my top 5 (in no particular order): --Jimi Hendrix --Stevie Ray Vaughan --Carlos Santana --Eddie Van Halen --Prince (go ahead, laugh...but listen to "When Doves Cry" or "Purple Rain" and tell me that he wasn't a talented kid who listened to his Hendrix) There are several notable entries which are not in there, true...I think the Edge has a great sound, and many argue that Joe Satriani is a guitar god. But this is my list. (And I hate Zepplin)
Moonlapse
My own favorites would be Michael Akerfeldt or Jimmy Page... not to say that they are the best, but that their work is the most appealing to me.

Gaius Paulinus Maximus
Aside from all the obvious ones, my own personal favorite guitarists are John Squires (The Stone Roses) and Noel Gallagher (Oasis) Prince (go ahead, laugh...but listen to "When Doves Cry" or "Purple Rain" and tell me that he wasn't a talented kid who listened to his Hendrix) I'm not laughing doc, i think that Prince is an absolute genius with a guitar, i saw him live a few years ago and he did a 5 min guitar solo which ended with a standing ovation from the entire arena! Pantagathus
Robert Fripp and Mr F Zappa, and I rather like Mr Zoot Horn Rollo I saw King Crimson about some years ago at Red Rocks, it was great. The Level 5 tour with Tool? As Pertinax already knows, I would also like to point out Fripp as high on my list. Of course Hendrix but here are some other (random) guitarists I think deserve a littel notice: Neil Young (self explanitory) John McLaughlin (Fusion-Jazz, got his start playing with Miles Davis) Bert Jansch (British Folk-Jazz fusion: 'Pentangle') Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) Steven Stills (pre-1974 he was the man, seriously the man could pick!) Clarence White (from the later countryrock Byrds, died in 1973 & would have been a household name had he not) John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) Robbie Robertson (The Band)
spittle
Chango Reinhardt (sp?) Gypsy-spanish sound. lost fingers in a fire and had to adapt a new style which is genius. as for all the 'rock gods' (middle aged men with long hair playing blistering solo's in an attempt to escape the ageing process) i can do without them.
