M. Porcius Cato
J. F. C. Fuller, Julius Caesar: Man, Soldier, Tyrant. Fuller's military background may provide exactly the perspective you're looking for. There are other good works, like those of Meier and Goldsworthy, but they tend to presuppose an advanced background or interest in the details of the Roman republic. Divi Filius
I always recommend Micheal Grant's Julius Caesar when you are looking for something simple. As for the Gallic War I don't think you will find anything much better than his own "De Bellum Gallicum"(The Gallic Wars AKA Conquest of Gaul). You can easily find something which will have a good amount of commentary on Caesar's account. Penguin Classics is probably the cheapest. ModernMarvel
I might be getting those too actually. What about some good stuff about Sulla? Marvel
Primus Pilus
Sulla by Arthur Keaveney. Aside from the ancient sources of course.

Mosquito
My favourite biography of Caesar is "Caesar" written by Gerard Walter. http://www.questia.com/library/book/caesar...therese-pol.jsp
