Virgil61
For Veteran' day I'm having a gathering of old friends and acquaintances in my home town who served in the military for a drink or two. Generally my view of a good whiskey is Maker's Mark and I'm happy enough with JD black label (I'll have both on hand). I'd like to get a special Scotch or Irish whisky/whiskey (a Protestant or Catholic whiskey as they'd say in parts of the NE) but I'm not the expert I'd like to be. I thought I'd settle on Glenlivet 12 year but I'm open to suggestions.
M. Porcius Cato
My favorite whisky comes from Islay, an island that produces particularly smokey and peaty spirits. Top two faves are Lagavulin and Ardbeg Uigeadail, but in a pinch any Islay will do. Pertinax?

docoflove1974
Spring for a couple of bottles of Johnny Walker Blue. Jeez...it's only like $150/bottle... I'm partial to Oban, when I get the funds.
longbow
Is Veterans day the same as our (British) Remembrance day? As to Whiskey,im no connoiseur but i do like a tipple of Glenmorangie now and again . Edited November 7, 2006 by longbow
Julius Ratus
Longbow, Veteran's Day in the U.S. is Nov 11. I know nothing about Rememberance day. Sorry. All I know about Whiskey is that JD made me sick, but it could have been the greasy roast beef. The Laphroiag I tasted was nasty. The only time I can palate Whiskey is when it is mixed with Coke or Sour mix. Right now I am drunk on a bottle of Ruhr-Mosel White Wein, but since the post is about Whiskey I will not extoll the virtues of Bona Vina. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who likes Islay malts and Lagavulin. Oban, yes indeed. Tobermory, why not? Some friends swear by Highland Park (from Orkney). It's a long way ahead but I am already looking forward to next Burns night, when a Scottish neighbour promises to provide bountifully; a haggis will fly in from Scotland specially for us (and certain other neighbours will have difficulty finding their way home afterwards). Especially the Highland Park... :pimp:

Pantagathus
Call it stereotyping but you struck me as a small-batch bourbon type of guy! Who says I'm not.... Booker's, Knob Creek, Evan Williams Single Barrel, Blanton's, etc... all quite delicious!
docoflove1974
All I know about Whiskey is that JD made me sick, but it could have been the greasy roast beef. BZZZZZZZT! Jack Daniels is not whiskey, despite what the label says. It's sour mash...a 'lower grade' bourbon whiskey...and, IMO, utter crap. Jack Daniels is to bourbon whiskey as Jose Cuervo is to tequila...undrinkable. While I'm mentioning bourbon, I do wish to include Knob Creek and Maker's Mark as two outstanding American bourbon cousins to the whiskey family. Well MM and Knob Creek are a cut above, but I enjoy JD black label. Call it stereotyping but you struck me as a small-batch bourbon type of guy! Who says I'm not.... Booker's, Knob Creek, Evan Williams Single Barrel, Blanton's, etc... all quite delicious! My son--who seems like he was in diapers yesterday--is really into the small batch or single barrels. Me, I cut 'em all with a little water.

Primus Pilus
Does drinking a 1/5 of Old Grand Dad when one is 16 causing one to retch all himself while subsequently vowing never to drink whiskey or bourbon again classify as being an expert? If so, I would not recommend Old Grand Dad.
