Fagles' Aeneid

M. Porcius Cato

The renowned Robert Fagles has finally released his translation of the Aeneid. Ten years in the making, this Aeneid reportedly is more free-flowing but literal than previous translations. Write-up in the Grey Lady.

Also, Amazon is offering an unabridged audio version of the Fagles version of the Aeneid. Having listened to the Iliad and Odyssey on tape, I'm looking forward to hearing the spoken version of, "I sing of arms and a man..."

I'm very excited about this new translation. Fagles previous translations of the Odyssey and the Iliad helped to energize renewed interest, hopefully this will do the same.

Having read the whole thing, I can only once again praise Fagles' translation.

I am on record as saying the Aeneid is not as good as the two works on which it was modeled, and I stand by that opinion. However, Fagles' rendition makes it a near thing. He has a gift to turn epic poetry into something beautiful for the English ear.

The introduction by Bernard Knox is noteworthy. He describes an experience where he, as an Allied officer, marches through Mussolini's war torn Italy and encounters a copy of the Aeneid, and decides to dedicate his life to the classics should he survive his mission. It was a touching moment.

Im reading Fangles translation right now and agree with pretty much everything you said. Absolutely fantastic, Fangles is amazing.
