Viggen
Lovers of Roman-era art and archaeology can thank the Vatican's parking problem for the discovery of one of the ancient world's best preserved necropolises - right inside the tiny city-state's walls. The necropolis was opened three years after it was unearthed by workers who were breaking ground for a new garage to ease the Vatican's dearth of parking space. One of the novelties of the necropolis, located along what was once the ancient Via Triumphalis (Triumphal Way) that Roman warriors used when returning from conquests, is that it offers a mixture of burial sites of both rich and middle class Romans. full article at SMH
DecimusCaesar
Interesting article and a wonderful discovery. Strange considering the body of the Pre-Constantine christian found at the burial site amongst the pagans. Maybe they will unearth even greater things. Gaius Octavius
The BBC said that the gravestones of a freedman and his wife were found dated from the time of Nero. This prompts me to ask when did it become legal to bury people within the walls of Rome?
M. Porcius Cato
GO, what walls of Rome extended as far as the Vatican?
Gaius Octavius
GO, what walls of Rome extended as far as the Vatican? Aha! I guess that the answer is cunningly hidden somewhere in that question. Thanks (And I now found out what that little red arrow next to a quote is about! Thanks.)
