Ursus (or anyone else this applies to).

Have you read Richard Holland's 'Augustus: Godfather of Europe'..?

If you could suggest a biog on Augustus, maybe compare Holland and Everitt's works, I'd be most appreciative.

I have not read Holland's _Godfather_. I will check it out.

I have read some "academic" works on Augustus, the type of which you said you weren't particularly inclined to. And then I've read very simple bios, like Werner Eck's _Augustus_.

I'm trying to find a nice middle ground between the academic and the too simple. Everitt seems to be along those lines, but I'll check out Holland as well!

EDIT: one of the reviews on Amazon for _Godfather_ scared me off. It said Holland's work is nothing but entertaining fluff that tries to draw too many paralells betwen Augustus and Bush. Not something on which I will waste money and time.

As much as I want to buy one or two of these books(perticularly Poverty in Rome and Journey of Theophanes, for some reason I have a big itch for Roman life now, the army took a step back), Ill have to wait until there are a certain quantity of them used availble for the very scaled back price.

I just recently purchased Micheal Grants The Antonines and The Severan used for 10 dollars(whereas new it was something like 50-90). They came in brand new conditions.

I already have a copy of Pompeii: the living city. it's a good book although it's been set out strangely...some parts read like a novel, like in the opening chapter:

"Decimus Lucretius Valens stretched out his frail body on the couch that his servants had positioned in the summer dining room at his request. from there he watched the last of the weak sunlight retreat behind the roofline of the courtyard, and felt the room grow cold."

other parts read as a factual book, with references to archaeological discoveries. I might give a look to the Augustus book as well if it's any good.

Ive just got a copy of Pompeii as well-do you wish to review it Decimus or should I put it on my list?

However "Food processing " is the book for me! Oh dear look at the price.
