Hollywood was never particularly kind to Ancient Rome. A generation or two ago, it was depicted as the tyrannical Evil Empire whose amoral paganism provided the antagonistic foil to Judeo-Christian values. Like Ursus said it is the best depiction of ancient Rome out there in terms of culture and religious practices even if the history and the costumes are not entirely accurate.
