Pertinax
I think we should now narrow the dates down to the 2nd and 3rd choices 31 March/1 April or 14/15 April 2007. Not that I have any hope of better weather, but perhaps a little more daylight to see by. Andrew Dalby has graciously agreed to give a brief Oratorical Disquisition , (on a topic of his choice). I suggest possibilities such as circumnavigation of the Medieval Walls, a visit to the Museum of Yorkshire (excellent range of Roman artefacts) , light refreshment in the Roman Bath Public House. An evening adjournment to a Curry House might be useful? The undercrypt of the Minster and the Jorvik "Viking" centre are also possibilities. Some members are relatively "local" or have visited previously , so navigating about town should not be difficult.

Skarr
Gentlemen , I have been given a timely reminder about our intended powwow. Please give consideration to the following possible dates 1. March 24/25 2007 2.March 31/1 April 2007 or 3.April 14/15 2007 for a meeting in York. The "missing" weekend is of course Easter . Let us try and achieve some sort of rough consensus.Your thoughts please. April 14 / 15 2007 seems like a good date for me ... I'll have to fly in from Boston and then take a train ? to York ? I may spend a couple of days in London around that time.
DecimusCaesar
It might seem best to have it in August, the days are longer, the chances of sunshine are much higher plus people can ask for a summer holiday around that time. Worry not, I was thinking August/September as well ! But we have to start small and work toward a sustainable timetable/modus operandi. Pertinax
Count me in. please. Phil The 14/15 April dates are now favoured so we can show hospitality to our oversees visitor (Skarr) , who if by misadventure cannot come at that time (Skarr if you are reading this your pm box is full!) may give us leeway to alter the date if.Skarr kindly lets us know his travel plans in advance . Please note that I suggest this as a "first off" meeting. Phil, I presume you are familiar with York?-please pm at your leisure.

phil25
If we are all planning to stay overnight, it might be worth contacting York university to see whether they can offer any accommodation. If we plan to meet around Easter it might be when the university is down/on vacation and thus there are rooms to spare in halls of residence at cheap prices. We might even get a room to socialise in. A Tolkien group I was involved in have done that in Oxford and Manchester, I cannot see why it should not apply in York. Just an idea, Phil
Pertinax
I will try Ripon and St John College, York ( I will see if they give a particular date to commit to) I have stayed with them before (plain and clean) when I was on a Surveying tour of the Minster Works- but there are numerous places to stay!
