Viggen
The Basques that settled 8,300 years ago in the Jaizkibel Mountain near the Basque coast were skillful enough to go fishing two kilometres out to sea. The human beings that lived in the Basque Country in the Mesolithic, more than 8,000 years ago, set sail out to sea fishing, something which meant 50 percent of their diet, Aranzadi society of sciences reported Tuesday after examining archaeological remains found in Gipuzkoa. full article at Eitb
Pantagathus
Gotta love Basque pride! Actually, the mesolithic Atlantic communities from the Tagus delta (Portugal) all the way to Armorica (Brittany) all did this. It was through the activity of prehistoric fishermen that a homogeneous Atlantic cultural identity evolved in prehistory. Tribal groups from vast distances were able to communicate with one another because they would work the same shoals. It was most likely through this process that the extensive Atlantic Bronze Age metal trade evolved.
docoflove1974
I read Mark Kurlansky's The Basque History of the World: The Story of a Nation, which I found interesting. Yes, it was highly pro-Basque, but it did help to explain why the Castilian/Spanish governments have never wished to relinquish control of them. Of course, the Basques claim to have discovered America well before even the Vikings, thanks to their cod and whaling expeditions. A quick and fun read, even if you have to work through the Euskara bias. Edited June 15, 2006 by Viggen

I don't know if they discovered America but they sure did discover Idaho and Eastern Oregon where there are tons of them today of all places. I'd say 50% of the sheep herd owners there are of Basque descent.

I will say that the Basque Cultural Center makes some mean grub.
