Yes, there is plenty of information known about ancient coinage. In fact, coins are a primary source of ancient research. You may want to get a bit more specific with your question.

My question is how can you tell how old the coins are when they're covered in rust? and how can you identify them?

Simple, look for latin words(assuming you have Roman coins) and for a head of some figure on the front side.
