Lost_Warrior
I read somewhere that Centurions (unlike normal legionaries) could marry (and that their wives went on campaign with them and stayed in thier tent ) is this true? What is everyone's opinion on it?
Fafnir
If it's true, then it's reasonable. Officers always get treated better than grunts, even today.
DanM
I don't know about ancient Rome, but its certainly true on HBO.
Hamilcar Barca
Unlike Senatorial or Equestrian officers which were stricty forbidden to marry while in service, Centurions were. There were of course many exceptions to this rule and soldiers often married anyway, their marriage just wasn't recognized by the state thus any childeren they concieved were deemed illigitamate. The same anti-mariage laws applied to basic legionaries. Oh and yes, a train of officer's spouses and childeren often followed the army.
