frankq
Anyone know what the full deal was with Mithridates of Pontus as far as ethnic background goes? I read he was descended in part from Persian royalty, yet wasn't he and his kingdom Hellene culturally?

frankq
Those post do not answer my question about his ethnic background. He is referred to as a Hellenistic king, but, again, I have read references that he was of partial Persian descent.

It is true. What references you read? Of course Mothridates had Hellenistic ruts but he had Asia despot's nature. Maybe you mean anything else? Would like to read the references. frankq
I need to go back and find the references. These are what threw me since I initially assumed he was just another Hellenistic king.
Northern Neil
According to Colin McEvedy in 'The Penguin Atlas of Ancient History,' Mithradates and the inhabitants of Bithynia and Pontus belonged to the 'Thraco - phrygian' branch of the Indo European group. This makes them closely related to the Phrygians, Cimmerians and Armenians, and distantly related to the Greeks. Culturally, however, I believe they adopted the trappings of Hellenism, mainly due to close contact.
Lacertus
As far as I know Mithridates was half-Persian and half-Greek. I did'n read about Phrygians, Cimmerians and Armenians branches. I think this data must be founded on really historical facts but I don't remember about this or anything like that.
