A stone wall and earthwork have been discovered in South-central Calabria, measuring 2.7 km (1.6 miles). Evidence of a Roman fossa (defensive ditch) and agger (embankment) has also been found.

Studies suggest that Roman general Marcus Licinius Crassus constructed it in 71 BCE to contain the slave revolt led by Spartacus.

Excavations have also unearthed numerous broken iron weapons, sword handles, large curved blades, javelin points, a spearhead, and other metal debris, indicating a pitched battle at the site between the Romans and Spartacus’ forces to break free of the trap.
