guy
Coin of Septimius Severus (reign AD193- 211) found in the hoard. Coin of Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus An unspectacular coin hoard of 1056 coins was found in Northern England in 2018 and was purchased by a local museum. The most recent coin was that of Septimius Severus (reign AD 193 - 211). Interestingly, there is a coin of Marc Antony from around 32 BCE in the hoard. Severus was in Britain from AD 208 till he died near York in 211. So it seems that someone in remote Britian carried around both contemporary coins of Septimius Severus and a coin of Marc Antony from two centuries prior. Quote The hoard was found in what would have been a rural farming landscape in the Roman period, far from any of the major Roman towns like Doncaster or Pontefract. The nearest Roman city would have been York, 28 miles away. Discovered in Norton in 2018 it includes fragments of the pottery vessel the coins were buried in It comprises coins from 18 Roman Emperors, the earliest dating back to 32BC depicts Mark Antony. The treasure also includes coins of Septimius Severus and his wife Julia Domna, a North African imperial couple who famously set up their imperial residence in York while Severus campaigned in Scotland. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-65244111 Location of York, United Kingdom, not far from the location of the coin hoard, as well as the place of Septimius Severus’s death Edited April 12, 2023 by guy
