guy
A portion of the Roman road Via Flaminia have been excavated outside the city of Rome. Quote As part of the excavation work aimed at setting up a new water pipeline in Riano (RM), works carried out by Acea Ato2 S.p.A. with Director of Works Marco Lupi, together with the S.I.T.A. srl with Technical Director Diego Piacente, two sections of the ancient Via Flaminia were brought to light, a consular road built by the censor Gaio Flaminio to connect Rome with central-northern Italy and built in just two years, between 220 and 219 B.C. The paved road, identified at a depth of about -0.90 m from the current floor, was investigated for a stretch 27 meters long. In this section, the modern Via Flaminia retraces the route of the Roman road in a rather precise manner, except for a slight offset. Quote The Via Flaminia or Flaminian Way was an ancient Roman road leading from Rome over the Apennine Mountains to Ariminum (Rimini) on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, and due to the ruggedness of the mountains was the major option the Romans had for travel between Etruria, Latium, Campania, and the Po Valley. The section running through northern Rome is where Constantine the Great had his famous vision of the Chi Rho, leading to his conversion to Christianity and the Christianization of the Roman Empire. Quote The ancient road, consisting of large basalt polygonal stones placed with extreme care, the flagstones, has been investigated for a maximum width of 4 meters and retains only small portions of the original crepidine on the western limit. On the other hand, it was not possible to bring to light the eastern limit of the ancient paving that continues below the road level of the modern Via Flaminia. http://archeologialazio.beniculturali.it/it/238/news/1469/a-riano-emersi-due-tratti-dell-antica-via-flaminia_ Via Flaminia - Wikipedia (Special thanks to Nina Willburger @DrNWillburger for bringing this article to my attention) Edited September 4, 2022 by guy
