guy
There has been a discovery of a Roman sanctuary in the Netherlands, dating from the early third century AD, probably associated with a military outpost. Quote Archaeologists have discovered an ancient Roman sanctuary with a relatively intact Roman temple in the Dutch central-east Gelderland province. Quote While several Roman sanctuaries were known in the Netherlands, this was the first such complete complex and temple found. Complete votive stones and altars dedicated to various gods and goddesses have been dug up on the site which the agency said was in use for centuries during the Roman Empire. Quote The discovery of a well with steps leading down into it has led the researchers to believe it may have been a place where ritual cleaning took place. The lettering on the votive stones and coins found in the well show the it was there around 220-230 AD. The many artefacts – ranging from bits of painted wall, statues of gods, jewellery, roof tiles, and the unique altar stones, will be keeping specialists busy for years, archaeologist Tessa Groot said. ‘We will find out which units were stationed here, but also what the soldiers who came here to put up the stones did to maintain the site.’ https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2022/06/archaeologists-uncover-an-exceptionally-well-preserved-roman-shrine/ https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/volunteer-archaeologists-discover-ancient-roman-temple-netherlands-2022-06-21/?rpc=401& Edited June 21, 2022 by guy
guy
Dr. Tom brought this article and this information to my attention: Quote Another "particularly remarkable" aspect was the discovery of several dozen small stone altars where Roman soldiers made offerings to their gods, goddesses and other deities. "These stones are dedicated to Hercules Magusanus, Jupiter-Serapis and Mercury," the agency said, adding that the temples were likely in use for centuries. Researchers also found an "unprecedented" number of limestone sculpture fragments. Magusanus is a German deity, related to the German word Macht, “power." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules_Magusanus Dutch researchers uncover Roman temple complex | News | DW | 20.06.2022
