New insights in ancient finds with modern technology

There was an interesting late Roman coin hoard found in Switzerland. Although not a major news event, it was interesting that imaging with a CT scan was used to more closely assess the hoard. (Translations are from Google Translate and I’m not certain of their accuracy):

In September 2021, volunteer Daniel Lüdin came across a pot of 1,290 coins from the 4th century AD near Bubendorf. The uncovering and first review of the find is doubly surprising: On the one hand by a piece of leather, which divides the coins into two portions and on the other hand by the unusual time of the hiding. Because coin treasures with the time position around 332–335 AD are hardly known so far.

”On September 6, 2021, the archaeological scout Daniel Lüdin surveyed a wooded area not far from Wildenstein Castle with his metal detector.  A strong signal from the device prompted him to dig.  After recovering several Roman coins and fragments of pottery, the full extent of his discovery became apparent: a hoard of coins that had been buried in a pot came to light.  Daniel Lüdin acted very carefully.  He covered the find again and informed Archeologie Baselland.  Thanks to this professional approach, an excavation team from Archäologie Baselland was able to salvage the pot – professionally fixed – in one block.”
