guy
There have been two recent findings on two different roads with similar names: Via Domitia and Via Domitiana. First the background: The Via Domitia: Quote The Via Domitia was the first Roman road built in Gaul, to link Italy and Hispania through Gallia Narbonensis, across what is now southern France. The route that the Romans regularised and paved was ancient when they set out to survey it, and traces the mythic route travelled by Heracles. (Wikipedia) The Via Domitiana: Quote Via Domiziana is the modern name for the Via Domitiana in the Campania region of Italy, a major Roman road built in 95 AD under (and named for) the emperor, Domitian, to facilitate access to and from the important ports of Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli) and Portus Julius (home port of the western Imperial fleet, consisting of the waters around Baiae and Cape Misenum) in the Gulf of Naples. The discovery of the Roman road section was made prior to laying a hydraulic pipe to secure the water supply between the southern French areas of Montpellier and Narbonne. An aerial view of the new Roman road section, part of the legendary Via Domitia, discovered in the scrublands above the town of Loupian, France. ( INRAP) New Section Of Famous Roman Road ‘Via Domitia’ Discovered In France | Ancient Origins (ancient-origins.net) News on the Via Domitiana (the road in Campana, Italy): A portion of the Via Domitiana has been discovered during routine excavation: Quote A stretch of the ancient Via Domitiana, has come to light in these days, during the works of arrangement of the road, near the La Schiana Hospital in Pozzuoli. The paved section, made with several silices in volcanic stone of classic hexagonal format, in good condition, is attributable to the Via Domitiana, or to one of its road diverticulum.
