guy
Julia Domna was the wife of Septimius Severus and mother to Geta and Caracalla. Part of her image was the beautiful and intricate hair style. Here is a beautiful gold coin of Julia Domna that recently sold in auction. Quote “A Roman Empire Julia Domna, AD 193-217 Gold Aureus graded NGC Ancients MS★, 5/5 Strike and 5/5 Surface with Fine Style (lot 64) realized CHF 204,000 (about $223,800). The coin features a portrait of Julia Domna, who was Roman empress as the wife of Emperor Septimus Severus. The result far exceeded the pre-auction estimate of CHF 120,000 (about $131,600).” This coin is a wonderful representation of Julia Domna, similar to the ancient statues and the Severan Tondo with her image: Here’s an old but very entertaining video of the recreation of the Julia Domna hairstyle by historical hairstylist Janet Stephens: https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/9849/ Edited February 17, 2022 by guy
