Evidence of Roman and German trade

The relationship between the Romans and the tribes of Germania was always a complicated one.

 

This is an interesting article that confirms the trade (at least of brass) between the Roman Empire and the kingdom of King Marobudos of Bohemia around the time of the Roman defeat in the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD).

(Roman brass objects studied were from the region of the kingdom of Marobudos in modern day Bohemia sometimes called the Marobudoses Empire.)

“Because there were no other studies into the prominence of items made of Roman brass, we chose a relatively new methodology that is based on the analysis of the chemical composition and isotopic ratios. We now know that [the brass] most likely came from the Massif Central in central-southern France [or what was then Gaul]. It was probably was mined around the city of Lyon and the south-eastern part of the Massif Central.”

(The source of the brass was from Massif Central of Southern France of what was then Gaul.)

“Marobudoses Empire was therefore quite threatening to them, especially after their defeat at the Battle of Teutoburg Forrest by Germanic tribes led by another Germanic ruler - Arminius. The Romans prized Marobudos for not invading their territories after the battle.

"Sources tell us that Arminius was actually asking Marobudos to attack the Romans, but the latter refused. He was latter also referred to as a friend of the Roman Republic in Roman sources.”

These studies confirm the trade that existed between Rome and potential German allies, especially after the calamitous defeat at the hands of Arminius in the Teutoburg Forest. It would have been important for Rome to solidify its alliances with friendly Germanic tribes at that time.
