Hallucinogens used in Eleusinian Mystery Cult

The Eleusinian Mysteries were initiations held every year for the cult of Demeter and  Persephone. I have little grasp of the numerous mystery cults in Ancient Rome (see link at bottom). It is no surprise, however, that hallucinogenics were used in its rituals.

Kykeon, the mysterious drink from the past linked to the Eleusinian Mysteries — few know of its existence, and fewer still speak or write about it. One of the few foods allowed during this time was the Kykeon. Etymologically, the Greek meaning is that of “mixed together,” homogeneous; however, in fact the final product was never a single substance, but a set of ingredients.

Its preparation was extremely simple: it was made of water, rye flour, and Roman mint (γληχων).

There is an ergot (fungus) that grows on rye that has hallucinogenic properties.

It can be said then, that the visions common to initiates during the Eleusinian Mysteries can be attributed to the psychotropic effects of the fungus — much like other types of fungus, notably mushrooms, which can be highly hallucinogenic.

Here is a quick review of seven of the most popular mystery cults of the ancient world:

 1. CULT OF CYBELE · 2. CULT OF SABAZIOS · 3. ELEUSINIAN MYSTERIES · 4. MITHRAISM · 5. CULT OF ISIS · 6. CABEIRI MYSTERIES · 7. DIONYSIAN MYSTERIES
