guy
Here is an interesting insight into the Roman presence in Scotland: The severed leg is believed to have been part of an elaborate equestrian statue erected in the second century AD. It was found in a bog in Milsington, Scotland in 1820. Quote Earlier scholars could not imagine such a grand statue had any place in the wilds of Scotland, and assumed it was looted from a major city such as York. However, recent research in Germany has changed our view. By gathering together all the tiny battered fragments found in excavations, they’ve shown that frontier forts also housed impressive imperial statues. So our leg could have come from Newstead, or a lost fort in the Hawick area. https://blog.nms.ac.uk/2017/04/24/legless-romans/ https://www.scotsman.com/heritage-and-retro/heritage/the-mystery-of-scotlands-legless-roman-where-did-it-come-from-3253265 Edited October 14, 2021 by guy
