Photograph: Parco Archeologico di Pompei pre/AFP/Getty Images Quote Six fragments of wall frescoes stolen from the ruins of ancient Roman villas have been returned to Pompeii’s archaeological park, after an investigation by Italy’s cultural protection police squad. Three of the relics, which date back to the first century AD, are believed to have been cut off the walls of two Roman villas in Stabiae, a historical site close to the main Pompeii excavations, in the 1970s before being exported illegally. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/may/18/stolen-roman-frescoes-returned-to-pompeii-after-investigation Edited October 14, 2021 by guy
guy
Another article: Quote The other three frescos were discovered in 2012, when Italian police disrupted an illicit archaeological dig in Civita Giuliana, a villa located roughly 2000 feet north of the walls of ancient Pompeii. The incident led to the establishment of a state-sponsored excavation at Civita Giuliana in 2017. It was there, in 2020, that archaeologists discovered a ceremonial chariotand the remains of a master and his slave, who were killed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.artnet.com/art-world/six-ancient-frescos-returned-pompeii-1970702/amp-page Other recent findings at site: Edited October 14, 2021 by guy
