guy
The fate of the Legion IX is one of the great mysteries. Dr. Elliot examines the four theories in his new book: Quote Was lost Roman Ninth legion wiped out in LONDON? Book hints 5,500 soldiers that vanished off face of earth were massacred after being sent south from York to suppress rebelling Britons. The last mention of the legion is on a gateway in York, which dates from AD108 They arrived in Britain in AD43 with Emperor Claudius's invasion Theories of what happened are detailed in Dr Simon Elliott's new book He concludes the men were likely ambushed and killed in what is now Scotland https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9200823/Hidden-fate-lost-ninth-legion-5-500-Roman-troops-likely-slaughtered-tribesmen.html (Scene from the The Eagle, a movie (2011) that deals with the fate of the missing Ninth Legion.) caldrail
This is one subject that won't go away. Prevailing opinion seems to favour defeat in Scotland, but even that wouldn't necessarily prevent the IX being revived provided the Eagle had not been lost. That is of course speculation but it does seem odd we don't have anything obvious in the sources to suggest what happened to them.
guy
(Scene from The Eagle) Here’s an excellent podcast on Legion IX by Dr. Simon Elliot. The last mention of the legion, which was made up of 5,500 officers and men, is on a gateway in York, which dates from AD108. The slab of stone now sits in York Museum https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-ancients/id1520403988?i=1000506341457 Edited November 5, 2021 by guy
