Gifting (Guest>host, Host>guest) when invited to dine

Ave Civitas,

I have a question about gifting.

Now-a-days is it proper for a guest to bring a gift to a host when invited (to dinner, perhaps).
Was it proper during the Later Roman Empire (4th-5th century) for the guest to bring a gift to a host when invited, or for the host to present a gift when a guest arrived?

And what if the guest is a client of the host?  Would that change protocol?

Again, thank you in advance.
