Lacertus
Legionaries served 25-26 years because retiring were once two years. The soldiers had to do savings his salary during the serves. After retirement a legionary could give some money or a lot of land. Distribution of land ceased in 2AD. There were attempts to organize a soldier settles in colonies but such settles were unpopular. The soldiers preferred to return to motherland but free lands weren
P.Clodius
Depends on what period you're talking about. That 25 year figure probably includes the 5 year Evocati service (eligable for call up as a reservist).
Valens
Allso,if a Legionare did serve his full term what type of pension would he receive? He would get a discharge bonus of 3,000 denarii. Or, as Lacertus mentioned, in earlier times he would get a land grant.
longbow
I was thinking around the time of the British invasion,General Plautius,s troops. thx all L Depends on what period you're talking about in earlier times he would get a land grant. Would that land be in Italy?or wherever the legionare came from?or would it be where he was last posted? Thx
Incitatus
The land could be anywhere, often in newly conquered territories such as Africa and Judea or Britain. There could also be a position as a higher governing rank for Centurions, this was all very flexible though!!
