caldrail Posted November 11, 2013 Report Share Posted November 11, 2013 (edited) Hadrian had ambitions to enclose the empire and r'omanise' it, to encourage Roman civilisation as he saw it. That resuklted in conflict with the Judaeans who wanted to retain their culture and religion. In particular, Hadrian had promised to rebuild Jerusalem after if had been destroyed in the Jewish War in 72ad. Unfortunately he decided instead to rebuild the city as a fresh new Roman city, Aelia Capitolina, which incensed the Judaeans because they regarded that as reneging on the promise, which then inspired a rebellion.
