Search out for snipers by sending one Soldier as a bait?

I watched The Big Red One a few days ago and when the Americans were in Corsica, Private Vinci stated: "You know how you smoke out a sniper? You send a guy outin the open and you see if he gets shot. They thought that one up at West Point."

Private Vinci then without speaking a word goes ahead of the squad up some stairs. He practically has volunteered to be the "bait".Vinci made it far without getting shot so the rest of the squad move but then another soldier got shot by a sniper.

 

Is this the real way of trying to locate snipers?The scene shows that the hiddensniper was not reckless enough to shoot a soldier on sight but waited for more to appear.
