Jimbow
Q: How do you start a fight on a Roman discussion group? A: Discuss military tunic colours.
Maximus
Question to Primus Pilus, based on all the evidence that you have seen, what is your personal view on the tunic colours and how do you come to that conclusion.

Primus Pilus
Quite honestly, I don't know. It's not something I've ever put any study into

Lost_Warrior
You know...somewhere I remember...reading or something...that different "branches" (army, navey, etc) used different colors. its an interesting link though
Aquilifer
I am certainly not an expert on tunic colours, but I always assumed they were red. They are in any pictures I have ever seen. But after reading all this it does make sense that there may have been different colours.
Maximus
Yes it is very interesting, does anyone else have any information on this subject that they would like to share with us. Oh by the way, Len Morgan is very informative and he is one of the people that gave me my original information!!!
Spartan19
My knowledge is the Imperial Legionaries wore a red tunic, but that is probably way to simple. As for the Republican Legionaries my guess would be the Hastati and Velites in white(since it was cheaper), Principes maybe in white, or maybe a blue or green, with the Triarii of course in red, since it was the most expensive, and another way for the triarii to show off his wealth. PerfectimusPrime
Under the Principate the legionaries wore a red tunic. I think there could be exceptions; I found this picture. Under the later empire they wore often white uniform. Most of the legionaries were already mercenaries and the discipline was lost.
