scmarine84
There's a new book out that I think those who frequent this forum might enjoy. Marching With Caesar-Conquest of Gaul is a work of fiction, but it tells the old story of the conquest of Gaul from a new perspective. As most fans of this genre and era know, the majority of the works concerning the Late Republic are usually told from the perspective of the "movers and shakers" of the era; Caesar, Antony, etc. Where MWC-CoG differs is that it tells the story of a man from the ranks who is part of the dilectus of the 10th Legion in 61 B.C. by then-Praetor Gaius Caesar. It is written in the form of a memoir, dictated by the character, Titus Pullus, as he looks back on his 42 year career in the Legions. Titus is one of those lucky few men to not only survive but rise through the ranks, retiring as a wealthy man. Now at the end of his life, he is looking back on the beginning of that career as he and his boyhood friend, along with the other men of his contubernium participate in the conquest of Gaul. The ebook, available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords.com, or through TheReadingRoom.com and Goodreads.com has received a total of 17 5 star reviews on the U.S. and U.K. Amazon sites, where it's being compared to the giants of this genre. Melvadius
During the Republican period, before there was a standing army, the appointed tribunes conducted an ad hoc draft, or dilectus, to recruit men into the consular army.
