Dalmaticus
Any information on this uprising? It seems that most people know of wars and battles held in western Europe and very little information on this part of the Empire. I would like to hear if there are resources available on Illyricum and this uprising specifically (Bellum Batonianum) as this seems to be the biggest war operation of the Romans after the Battle of Cannae two centuries earlier. Augustus even resorted to purchase and emancipation of thousands of slaves in order to send enough troops to the Balkans (10 legions were sent there, cc 100 000 men in total). This makes most other, better known campaigns, look like a sweet camping and yet, no word on this.
Pompieus
The primary sources for the Illyrian revolt are Dio Cassius LV.28.7 et al and Vellius Paterculus II.109.5. There is, apparently, an article by S.L Dyson on "Native revolts in the Roman Empire" in Historia 20 (1971). References are from the Cambridge Ancient History. Dalmaticus
Thank you. While searching for Dyson, I also found this: http://historiantigua.cl/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Illyricum-in-Roman-Politics-229BC-AD68.pdf which seems to have a nice insight on the area and Roman conquest of the region. Pompieus
Excellent find! It gives an excellent description of the way Roman expansion was usually driven by "security" concerns viz the 16BC raid on Istria and the threat of the kingdoms of Maruboduus and the Dacians. Also how the Romans at this peiod tried to control regions thru local elites and existing political institutions backed up by regional military forces and tried to avoid direct administrative control.
