gilius
I've checked all my books on Roman history, yet hardly any of them mention Raetia, conquered by 2 brothers--Tiberius and Drusus--in a pincer attack. This happened in the reign of Augustus, and Raetia became a Roman provice in the same year (15 BC). Mentioned in: Eager For Glory (best account found so far!) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eager-Glory-Untold-Conqueror-Germania/dp/184884333X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321098795&sr=1-1 Roman Gaul and Germany (brief description) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Gaul-Germany-Exploring-World/dp/0520069897/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321098843&sr=1-2 History of Rome (very brief mention in a timeline) http://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Rome-Marcel-Glay/dp/1405183276/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321098863&sr=1-2 NOT Mentioned in: Chronicle of the Roman Republic http://www.amazon.com/Chronicle-Roman-Republic-Augustus-Chronicles/dp/0500287635/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321098712&sr=1-1 Chronicle of the Roman Emperors http://www.amazon.com/Chronicle-Roman-Emperors-Reign---Reign/dp/0500050775/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321098712&sr=1-2 Rome in the Ancient World http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rome-Ancient-World-Romulus-Justinian/dp/0500251525 Romans, Celts and Germans http://www.amazon.com/Romans-Celts-Germans-German-Provinces/dp/0752419129/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321098632&sr=1-1 New History of the Roman Emperors http://www.amazon.com/History-Roman-Emperors-Roger-Michael/dp/1902886364/ref=sr_1_12?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321098593&sr=1-12 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chronicle-Roman-Emperors-Reign-Reign/dp/0500050775 Please check your library! Does anyone know any good books that mention the Raetian conquest in more than a sentence? Ideally I would like a book on the Roman Empire (or late Republic) that talks about Raetia and the brothers or a good book about Roman Switzerland, or about the Emperor Augustus. gilius
Haven't found a single biography on Augustus that mentions the conquest of the Alps! Only a handful of other books to add to the list so far: The Cambridge Ancient History 14 Volume Set in 19 Hardback Parts: The Cambridge Ancient History Volume 10: The Augustan Empire, 43 BC-AD 69 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cambridge-Ancient-History-Hardback-Parts/dp/0521264308/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321873217&sr=1-2 A History of Rome Under the Emperors (Routledge Key Guides) http://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Under-Emperors-Routledge-Guides/dp/0415206472/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321873519&sr=1-1 From the Gracchi to Nero: History of Rome from 133 B.C. to A.D. 68 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gracchi-Nero-History-Rome-D/dp/0415025273/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321873549&sr=1-1 Noricum (The provinces of the Roman Empire) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Noricum-provinces-Roman-Empire-Alfoldy/dp/0710073720/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321873674&sr=1-7 I've had to give away several expensive books I thought were good to charity shops because they are sadly inadequate!
