GhostOfClayton
Letter received 11th October from the Senhouse Museum Trust: One of the most interesting areas surveyed by geophysics, the field once the Deer park of the Senhouse Estate is now subject to a request for planning permission from Allerdale Borough Council. A developer wishes to build an estate of 152 houses there. The scheme has met with considerable local opposition on grounds of road safety and adverse environmental issues, and because of the destruction of archaeology on a site so close to the Roman fort at Maryport. Preliminary archaeological surveys have already revealed burials, a Romano-British enclosure, a Roman road and possible medieval structures. This has been the museum's main concern. our chairman of Trustees, Peter Greggains, has been liaising with local objectors to the scheme. At a recent meeting he said "Our Trust is totally opposed to this scheme, which could have devastating consequences for Roman Maryport, one of the most unexplored sites on the Roman frontier. We do not know enough about what secrets the area is still hiding - and it will be too late to find out when there are rows of houses on the land". One of our Trustees, prof. David Breeze has been in contact with the archaeological community. The response from ICOMOS (international Council on Monuments & Sites) has been a letter to the Planning Officer in which it is stated: "ICOMOS UK considers that this application will have a highly detrimental impact on the setting of the World Heritage Site.... The Wall and its forts were meant to dominate the landscape. Any development that lessens the ability of a section of this monumnet to tell its story could be potentially highly damaging to the overall record". Disappointingly, Hadrian's Wall Heritage Ltd, the owners of Camp Farm, have backed the development, because it will provide them with a cheap access road to their proposed visitor centre. More information about the housing development can be accessed on the Allerdale Borough Council website: www.allerdale.gov.uk. We enclose a copy of a petition opposing the development. if you agree, please sign (and get your friends to sign also), and return. A copy of this letter (with the petition on the back page) is attached. Please do sign and send off the petition.
