Melvadius Posted August 18, 2011 Report Share Posted August 18, 2011 This BBC headline indicating that this is 'new' discovery is a bit of a misnomer as the suggestion that pre-Roman invasion Silchester was planned has been circulating (at least amongst the archaeological community) for several years now. However the linked item where 'Prof Mike Fulford will be talking to Dr Alice Roberts in the latest series of Digging For Britain on BBC Two in September' should still be worth a look especially if this is news to you. Archaeologists believe they have found the first pre-Roman planned town discovered in Britain. It has been unearthed beneath the Roman town of Silchester or Calleva Atrebatum near modern Reading. The Romans are often credited with bringing civilisation to Britain - including town planning.
