Segestan
Mr Charles Rollin wrote an excellent book describing the former glory of the east.... http://www.archive.org/stream/historyofegyptia01rolliala#page/184/mode/2up
Centurion-Macro
In my opinion, ancient empires such as the Medes and the Babylonians are often overlooked by many people. I think there should be more study on these subjects, because these empires really interest me.

Why and how such advanced peoples rose and fell?
Kosmo
I think there is not much about them because the median state was short lived, there is little information about the Medes and they are generally put together with the other Iranian tribes under the name of Persians. Sometimes the other thing happens and Medes was used as an overall name for all Iranians.

Why and how such advanced peoples rose and fell? Definitely. What surprises me is that the average person knows what the epics of Homer are, yet the average person has no idea what Gilgamesh is...I myself would really like for all these empires to be discussed in school rather than just forgetting them. I personally don't know much about the Medes though, as I haven't had time to read about them. But they are definitely on my list of empires to read about. I often put the Medes under the umbrella of Persian peoples because the lived in Iran, but is that wholly accurate thing to do? Not really, it would be the same as claiming the Etruscans and Romans are one people because they both influenced each other and lived in Italy. Reading this thread though has made me curious to learn more about the Achaemenid Persians and the Medes. The Medes do seem to have influenced the Achaemenids a lot, as they were descended from them, and were later incorporated into their empire.
