I've been there in March, and it is quite a nice museum. On the ground floor it starts with the first settlers in the area, on the first floor it continued with the Gauls up to Caesar's invasion of the region, and on the second floor it continues with the Roman era up to the rise of Christianity and the invasion of the Franks. I liked it because it's about the area where I live, though I would have liked to seen more about the Roman invasion and it's battles in the region. But if you are interested in daily live in and around a Roman city it is very nice. A small selection of pictures from my visit (I have many many more) https://picasaweb.go...ATVCATVNGRORVM# Cheers, Erwin Edited May 22, 2011 by Macerinus

Last time was for the British Galleries in the V&A in 2003 so any true Romanophile has got to be congratulating this years winner.
Aurelia
I've been there but unfortunately before the museum was revamped. Would be curious to see what it's like now.
Bryaxis Hecatee
To my everlasting shame I never went there despite the fact it's less than 100km from my home... (but I rarely go to Flanders I must say). I might go there next week-end then and bring back some pictures and, why not, a museum review... parthianbow
Anthony Riches, fellow Roman author, was there a few months ago doing research for his latest book, and he praised it highly. It will definitely be on my list when I next go to Belgium.

Damien Tournay
It's an interesting museum. Between November 11 and June 12, the museum will accomodate a great exhibition on the city of Sagalassos, excavated by Belgian archaeologists. Macerinus
Thank you for the link Damien, I will certainly visit the museum again between these dates.
Bryaxis Hecatee
We might want to organize a small UNRV meeting for the visit then for, knowing Damien, he'll certainly want to go too, as shall I... Other members might also be interested. And, who knows, if enough are interested we could try to get a special guide (even if I think Marc Waelkens would be a bit too much to ask )

You, Damien from Brussels and Me from Gulpen (Limburg-NL)....any others
GhostOfClayton
I may well be game for this - is it easy to reach from Zeebrugge?
Macerinus
Although it is on the other side of Belgium it shouldn't be to difficult by train I think, or about 2 hours by car, though the motorways around Brussels can be tricky How can we set this up easily? Open a new thread and add a poll with some dates? Cheers, Macerinus Erwin
Bryaxis Hecatee
good idea. I'm currently in Berlin on a small Eeepc so if someone else could set up things that could be best. I'd suggest that we either give a meeting hour in Tongeren or start from Brussels and take a group transport from there (either car sharing or train or renting a bus if we're truly numerous). We could also see who in Belgium has room for one or two peoples too...
Bryaxis Hecatee
I've been to Tongeren earlier this month, here are some pictures to give you some idea of how this very nice museum got it's award, and also pictures of the exhibition of the turkish city of Sagalassos
