Guest spartacus
My wife often accusses me that following the Ancient World has become an "obsession", taken over my life! I suppose she is right, I first got hooked back in 1967, as a young boy my dad got me some cheap plastic roman soldiers to play with, I played with them for hours! Next , a chariot and horses and so on until I had a mini army, my grand-father then gave me an old book on the Roman Empire and I got absorbed reading that and that was the beginning of a life-long dedication to the Romans! Since then, I have travelled literally thousands of miles visiting Roman sites, spent a kings ransom on books, then buying Artefacts started, again over the years I have spent a small fortune on them, sat for hours at auctions to buy the rarest objects I could find and so on, so yes, it is an obsession after 37 years I am still fascinated and remain in awe of Roman achievements, just as I was on the first day when dad got me those toy legionaires! I have still not made it to Rome yet, hope to make my "pilgrimage" in the near future, in 11 weeks I am off back to Crete to study Gortyn again, it is a vast site so last time I was there I only managed half the site, looking forward to that! What got you interested in rome ?
Guest Scanderbeg
Funny enough. A video game. If you asked me anything about the Roman Empire 8 months ago. I could tell you Julius Caesar was one of them. Yes it rather embarrasing. But I sure did a lot of progress in 8 months. But I had always had an interest in antiquity. I got a 96 average on my first year of world history simply because it was so heavily based on the era. So really a videogame just pushed me. I havn't been able to make "pilgrimages" yet but this summer I will be traveling Europe with my uncle. i am also interested in being an actor and writing movies. I hope in the future to write a movie based on Scipio and Hannibal.

Ursus
I've been interested in Ancient Greece and Rome (and related ancient cultures) since I was a little kid. But it's only been in my post University days that I've made a committment to serious, scholarly study of it. Three things got me into it: 1) Mythology and religion 2) Politics and history 3) Architecture and culture
Guest Scanderbeg
One of the main things that interest me in military. Though the politics and general life also are interesting. but mainly war.
P.Clodius
I remember seeing an episode of I Claudius when it was first broadcast backhome in 1976, I was 11 and didn't understand it too much. I came to the US in 91 and when the History Channel first started they had it on and I was hooked to it. But I didn't know if it was true or not so I got the two books and found them even more fascinating, but saw in the intro it wasn't true but it was based on Seutonius, et al. So I read Seutonius, then Tacitus (Annals), and Dio. I knew I was truly hooked when I read Livy's The War with Hannibal. What a story!! Then I just continued to read as much as I could. I have quite an extensive library now, (as I'm sure most of you do), and some books I read over and over. Recently I've gotten into Newsgroups and discovered there is so much more out there, hehehe. But my dream is to write a script, make a documentary and have it shown on PBS.
Guest spartacus
My hope in the future is to finance a dig and discover a totally new roman site! I have a small team put together ( mainly friends ) and I have my own ideas on likely locations I think may prove fruitful based on research and ancient resources! I hope to make a start this summer, as good weather is crucial, if it goes ahead I will photograph our progress and do a report for the Forum
