Guest Scanderbeg
For those who live or have lived in areas ruled by the Romans. Post pictures of remains in your land. I was born in Albania and in the city of Durres. The remains of an Amphtheater lie there. Here is a picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/5...mphitheater.jpg Many believe that is the place Titus was martyred Also for the Byzantine Empire fans here is old mosaic: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/a...ter_Mosaike.jpg Here is another one, near the border of Greece. it was excavated after WW2. It was a Roman founded, Illyrian city called Butrint. In it was found a bath house and a amphitheater http://www.miras.cz/foto/albanie/butrint-theatre.jpg Thanks to wikipedia for the two first photos wikimedia.org. The last one gotta give thanks to .miras.cz

Guest Scanderbeg
I must be such a loser. I got so exicted to have gone to those areas. I keep going "Imagine. 2000 years ago people were watching gladiatorial games." in a level of enthusiasm that you only see in a kid at a toy store. I went inside studied everything. The lions chamber, the holds. Oh man it was heaven. I seriously makes me think about going into archeology. Anyway moving on.

Guest spartacus
Those photos are great! perhaps we should start a Roman Photo Gallery on the site!
Ursus
I'm jealous. You guys can look at Roman artifacts in your neighborhood. My own neighborhood is decorated with broken down moter vehicles sitting on cinder blocks.
Primus Pilus
Photos are great, just make sure we give credit where its due, if they aren't personal photos.
Guest Scanderbeg
I also just found out recently that the battle between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great happened just a few miles from my grandma's old house in a city named Vlore. P.Clodius
Durres was called Dyrachium and was Pompei's main supply base. Caesar tried to capture it but was beaten back. He later stated to his men that "If the enemy was led by a winner they'd have won the war today". Does your grandmother live near Pharsalus? Guest Scanderbeg
Actually my late grandfather did for whenever he took trips to Greece. But the battle I was told was a few miles out of Vlore and a little bit out of Albania so it couldnt have been Caesar and Pompey.
Primus Pilus
From what I can tell, Duress is only about 50 miles away from Vlore, so the battle of Dyrrachium was indeed quite close. Perhaps not as close as you thought, but still in the general area. Hell ancient Epirus and modern Albania aren't that big
