Roman archaeology holiday in England

This extraordinary permanent large-scale excavation site is in a quiet residential area close to the River Tyne and the North Sea. South Shields Roman Fort is the site of a roman military and civilian settlement and lies within the UNESCO Hadrian

From a quick search this appears to be springing off of the back of the Earthwatch Institute organised excavations at Arbeia, more details of the archaeological team involved, dates (and prices) can be found at the Earthwatch Institute website here.

In fact as can be seen here, Earthwatch seem to run several archaeological packages.

I have to say that you may find there are other (and possibly cheaper) ways of getting involved in archaeology although they do seem to cater for a slightly more relaxed way of excavating than some more pressurised sites may be able to provide.

Alternatively you may want to look at some of the sites listed by About.com.Archaeology which provides links to dedicated websites providing details of numerous excavations being carried out in 2011.

Should anyone plump for this holiday (and can I say it looks good to me - they're probably working on an area of the vicus, if I had to guess) please allow yourself plenty of time to explore the area. There is so much Roman stuff to explore, a week is not enough!

BTW - If anyone was looking in vain for details of how to get involved in the ongoing excavations at Vindolanda.

Be warned however that the annual Friends of Vindolanda newsletter has advised that, as is now usually the case, all available places were sold out within 3 days of the excavation details being announced on the Vindolanda website on 1 November :(

Whisper it but IF we are very lucky this single location may have provided the holy grail of our hunt for ANY inscriptions on the site - a wooden tablet (I'm not sure if wax or writing)) which hopefully will have some marks on it giving us a clue to what the site was called or who it was dedicated to.

If we are unlucky after conservation it will prove to simply be someone's shipping list or at most contain a few indecipherable scratches.

Interesting . . we await the outcome with baited breath. I'm sure you'll let us know.
