Kosmo
I do almost all of my reading from a computer screen. Since I started this habit years ago I read much more then I did before and unlike other people I have no problem with it and I prefer it to paper. That is why the Kindle did not had much impact on my habits. When I'm home I prefer the large beck-lit computer screen and I don't read much when I'm away, the strong point of Kindle. I don't see the advantage of needing a light source when reading from Kindle. Beck lit screens damage the eyes? I like the long battery life of Kindle, that it does not heat up and it has free wireless access to Amazon from any country. For this reasons Kindle beats the laptop and the netbook as a reading device. I also like that the USB cable doubles as charger. I have lots of paper books in my apartment and I rarely touch them... Gaius Paulinus Maximus
Mmmmm interesting!!!! I'm a massive fan of books and of reading, especially on paper, I really can't see (or should I say couldn't see) the attraction of reading from a computerised screen but the more I here about kindle the more I am becoming drawn to it. I like to keep my books and every now and then I like to go back to them and have a flick through, maybe read again etc, what sort of memory does the kindle have? And my one big worry about it is that if I ever loose it or it gets stolen then thats all my books gone in an instant! Where as the chances of loosing my bookcases or god forbid somebody breaking in and stealing all my books are pretty slim to say the least, I reckon the tele, computers etc would go first!! I guess i should download the books app on my ipod and see how I get on with that before I take the plunge with a kindle, how much is the kindle by the way? GhostOfClayton
I recognise all the fears you have there, Paulinus, having shared them 'before'. The only thing Kindle (or any e-reader) doesn't do well is those books with a heavy photo/picture content that you are inclined to flick lovingly through, pausing hither and thither as a picture catches your eye (Guy de la Bedoy Edited January 17, 2011 by GhostOfClayton
Gaius Paulinus Maximus
Thanks for the info Clayton! This bloody Kindle thing is sounding more attractive day by day!!
Maty
Kindle is software rather than hardware. You can get a dedicated Kindle reader from Amazon, but I use kindle on my iPad, where I get the advantages of long battery life and backlighting and colour. I started using it for ancient texts (easily searchable, makes indexes redundant, and you can scribble notes all over it) then I wanted to read a particular book on impulse and saw it was available as an ebook. I downloaded it and was reading moments later. The eBook selection on Amazon may not be comprehensive, but its much bigger than any bookshops in town. The only downside is that I got my wife an eBook for Christmas, and ever since I've had to fight her for the iPad. She's getting her own on Valentine's day. You can get a dedicated Kindle reader from Amazon, <snip> Good point, Maty. I know that I Kindle (what do you know! It can be used as a verb as well) on my iPod Touch as well as the Kindle reader, and can segue seamlessly between the two. I am quite jealous of a household that has just one iPad, let alone two. I'm yet to even see one in the flesh. Edited January 21, 2011 by GhostOfClayton
Gaius Paulinus Maximus
I've recently downloaded the kindle app for my ipod touch and I've gotta say that I'm pretty impressed. I've read two books on it already with no problems so my question is why would I want to go and spend
