Country: UK

Date: Sun 28 & Mon 29 Aug 2011 (bank holiday)

Place: Wroxeter Roman City

Event: "Gladiators".

Link: English Heritage Events Website

"Witness the thrill of a gladiator fight at Wroxeter Roman City this bank holiday weekend, as our Roman gladiators demonstrate techniques in a fight to the death."

Also, a good excuse to get a look at the Roman villa you saw being 'constructed' in Rome Wasn't Built in a Day.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going to this, so if you are too, let me know and we can maybe meet up.

If my numbers come up on Wednesday night, Crispina, there'll be a Limo taking you to the airport to pick up your business class ticket!

Just to repost an event Melvadius drew attention to in a different thread:

In case anyone in Britain is interested in seeing cavalry reenactors in action there is a Roman Cavalry unit attached to Comitatus and they are due to put on a display during next Weekends Bank Holiday at Maryport.

From their website:

28th/29th August BH - Senhouse Museum Roman Festival

Maryport

Cavalry, artillery, infantry and living history

as part of the Maryport Roman Festival.

If anyone's been interested in this event, but couldn't make it, I blogged about it here, and posted all my photos here.

For completeness' sake, the outfit who staged the reencatment were called 'Britannia'. They specialise in late Roman to 6th Century AD reenactment, so the gladitorial stuff is only part of their work. They have an interesting looking kit guide. Anyway, it's all on their website.

Mrs OfClayton and myself are now members of English Heritage. This means we can look down on those of you who aren't members in a superior, yet slightly paternal, way.

Another advantage is that we get a magazine with all the events coming up.

So for those of you who are also in this exclusive club, here are the upcoming Roman related events:

Tour of Wroxeter's infamous Town House/Villa with none other than its designer, archaeologist Dai Morgan Evans.

10 Nov, 9 Feb and 8 March

10-12am or 1-3pm

Alternatively, you can meet (and be shown round by) the guys who built the thing

24 Nov, 23 Feb and 22 Mar

10-12am or 1-3pm

Tour of Chesters Roman Fort and Museum with Hadrian's Wall Curator, Georgina Plowright

9 Nov & 16 Feb

10:30-12 and 2-3:30

Tour of Chesters Roman Fort and Museum with Hadrian's Wall Curator, Georgina Plowright

10 Nov, 17 Feb and 16 Mar

10:30-12 and 2-3:30

The lesson here is that Georgina Plowright takes longer lunch breaks than Dai Morgan Evans.

Anyway, remember that in order to keep out the riff-raff, these are for English Heritage MEMBERS ONLY.

Northern Frontier if you're reading this, this is the sort of trip you should be getting EH to accept FOHW on.

Warriors2.jpg

Quite an exciting one that I fear I won't be able to get to. :(

WAY OF THE WARRIOR - EPIC MOVIE ARMS AND ARMOUR

Country: UK

Date: 14 Jan to 19 March 2012

Place: Tullie House Museum, Carlisle

Website: Tullie House

This is a visually stunning touring exhibition of movie arms and armour, used in epic historical blockbuster movies. It will include 11 full warrior costumes containing 'screen used' props from some of the biggest historical movies including: Gladiator, Alexander, King Arthur, Centurion, Kingdom of Heaven, and The Last Samurai. All the movie armour and costumes are historically based, many representing highly accurate visual reconstructions of warrior equipment and weapons from the ancient and medieval worlds.

The exhibition includes large format, illustrated graphic panels that describe the warrior's weapons, tactics and philosophies and their most famous battlefield encounters. Uniquely, this exhibition offers a range of interactive, replica handling armour and movie props for visitors to experience, ranging from a gladiator helmet to a pair of knights' gauntlets.
