No, I haven't read it but I look forward to doing so. Aristotle's Children: How Christians, Muslims, and Jews Rediscovered Ancient Wisdom and Illuminated the Dark Ages by Richard E. Rubenstein is also a good read on medieval intellectual life. This book introduced me to the lively student debates, especially those in Paris, of the 12th and 13th centuries. Repression was certainly rampant. However, new learning and new angles on the old resulted from the reintroduction of Aristotle to the West.
