Kosmo
Songs with roman subjects are unusual. The best is Spin Doctors - Cleopatra's Cat with some funny lyrics: Cleopatra's favorite cat Got his hands on Caesar's spats The heat was on as you could see So he front 'em to Mark Antony. Said, "My girlfriend's cat is smarter than me." Caesar had an eye for clothes He saw them spats and said, "I like those." Caesar had no thing to say, except, "Jesu Christi Domine, Et tu, Brute, Jesu Christi Domine, Et tu, Brute." The senate tried to sympathize It was the cat they should despise Informant told his whereabouts Centurions to seek him out Centurions! There go the centurions. Brutus had to turn his head When THIS cat done went and said, "If he's got this thing for shoes, He just might be ambitious, too. They got holidays all in his name, And all a tyrant needs is fame. Those fascists don't play pretty games Egypt is the place to be... But Rome is a democracy. Rome!" Caesar never got them back 'Cause they killed his ass in the second act. Brutus spoke, then Antony: Said, "My girlfriend's cat is smarter than me. Friends, Romans, can't you see My girlfriend's cat is smarter than me Egypt's biggest rivalry: Cleopatra's cat and me." Kosmo
The Viva la Vida song of Coldplay has a weird reference to "roman cavalry choir"
Kosmo
Also there are some references to roman history in the telling of London's history by Clint Mansell - Stay With Me (Elfsong's 'Stay With V' Mix). Music from the excellent film "V for Vendetta". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XyNKfQFwyw&feature=search
Kosmo
For me the best song with a general historical theme is Within Temptation - Our Solemn Hour. They are now my favorite band.
Gaius Paulinus Maximus
Another good song with a Roman theme is "Decline and fall of ancient Rome" by Goldblade. Put it in the iTunes search engine, surprisingly it's actually Not a bad song, quite catchy infact!
Nephele
I've always loved the opening song from Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. The depicted scenes just seem more like "real" ancient Rome, to me. -- Nephele

DecimusCaesar
I thought that Lady Gaga's song Bad Romance was about the Romans originally. I misheard one lyric as 'What killed the Romans?'. It might have been her take on Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. On another note, what about Hail Caesar by AC DC - My link Edited September 9, 2010 by DecimusCaesar
Lanista
Can't believe these two haven't been flagged up: Forever (wait for the "Our Roman Gods are watching - Make sure they are not ashamed!" bit) Divintus (linguists - its in Latin!) -
GhostOfClayton
In "Medicinal Compound", the Scaffold do point out that Ebineezer thought he was Julius Caesar. Also, there's AC/DC's "For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)", refering to Suetonius' "Morituri Te Salutant" (Those about to die salute you) supposedly uttered by Gladitors to the Emperor, or similar host of the games, before knocking seven bells out of one another. Kosmo
Ex Deo - 'Romulus' Indeed. Nice! They also have this video, hands down the best music video featuring romans:
GhostOfClayton
They also have this video, hands down the best music video featuring romans: I couldn't agree more with you about this video, Kosmo. Your comment does beg one question, however. Are there any more music videos featuring Romans (outside Ex Deo, of course)? Ursus
Anyone want to take bets on who is the first member to criticize that video for any perceived inaccuracies in armor, weapons, dress or martial tactics? Seriously, I really don't like 'growly voice' metal, but great video. Edited September 18, 2010 by Ursus

Seriously, I really don't like 'growly voice' metal, but great video. I actually muted the grunts after a while and just watched the rest of the video in silence.
