Maximus Caesar
Also, what did byzantine catapharacts look like? Did the Footsoldiers of Byzantine armies wear the armour of the Western Roman Legionaries?
Guest Scanderbeg
This may not count as much but whenever I use the legion in Rome Total War against Macedon I crush them using Roman legion speed and manueverablity. Those phalangites get seprated from their lines outflanked and then just picked off.

No they didn't. The swords were no longer Gladius and the armor worn was lighter and of different design. In fact the design of the legion had gone through extensive changes throughout time. The late Roman legion almost entirely different from the earlier legion of Rome. At the heart though, Bizantine recruitment and training was much like the legion. Wow, Im posting too much. An interesting discussion going on at the Total War historical forum about this topic: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/index.php?s...showtopic=24112
