  1. Porte de Mars in Reims, France.
  2. Has anybody downloaded the latest edition of Europa Barbarorum mod (http://www.europabarbarorum.com/)? In my view it is better than RTR
  3. I believe Tacitus also gave Cassius that title. Our source regarding Cremutius Cordus is Tacitus. Whether he agreed that Cassius was the last of the Romans, Tacitus doesn't say. My apologies. In regards to Cassius he actually said the following: 'The violent deaths of Brutus and Cassius left no Republican force in the field...murder had disposed of all men of spirit.' I must have mistaken the word 'Republican' for the word 'Roman'.
  4. Why would there be a source circulating around that denied something that was concocted by hearsay? In the past MPC, you have shunned the use of Suetonius on the grounds of his exaggerating nature. However, now that you have found a quote that quashes Augustus' reputation - and thus feeds your lifelong ambition - Suetonius is now apparently 100% fact. As I am sure was mentioned earlier, Suetonius is probably as reliable as a tabloid newspaper
  5. I do believe that the Spartans lost the Battle of Thermopylae. Do they do so in the film? Anyway, there is one part of the film trailer that really got on my nerves: the quote 'tonight we dine in hell'. Plutarch's King Leonidas had him urging his men on before the battle saying 'have breakfast for tonight we dine in Hades!'; in my opinion, this is a much more theatrical line. Does Hollywood have to dumb everything down? There are already too many examples of them doing so: changing the title of 'The Madness of King George III' to just simply 'The Madness of King George' because audiences would have thought that it was final instalment of the George Trilogy; replacing the word 'Philosopher' with 'Sorcerer' in the title of the first Harry Potter film because Americans apparently could not handle the former term. Why insult us so
  6. Cheers! Although wasn't that prestigious title also given to Emperor Valens and Flavius Aetius? True enough, but I've always thought that the Roman historian Cremutius Cordus had it right when he said that Cassius was the "last of the Romans". After Phillipi and after the rights of Romans diminished exponentially, all that were left were Romanaculi. I believe Tacitus also gave Cassius that title.
  7. The above film is often rated highly by most scholars dealing with the period; BBC History Magazine viewed the film in high regard and did a very good assessment of it. I will try and find a link to the article.
  8. Who is your consular colleague?
  9. I have said it once, and I will say it again
  10. Didn't Augustus nominate two of his daughter's(?) children 'Caesars' and had Tiberius adopt them? You mean Gaius and Lucius. If we assign ourselves to Suetonius' Twelve Caesars, Tiberius is the third Caesar; however, if you were referring to the third emperor, Caligula (Gaius) is your man.
  11. That cartoon confused me; surely an individual born under the Third Reich would not be more than twelve by the time of its fall, and therefore would not be eligible to fight in her armies. For a more accurate depiction of Hitler in cartoon form, click
  12. Atlas of the Human Journey. I have been using the above website for revision, and I just thought that I should share it...I hope you like.
  13. I think Livy's account is in keeping with his view of Rome being corrupted after military contact with licentious East. Keep in mind that public morality was a big issue when Livy wrote his history; the above passage probably mirrors Livy
  14. I think the purpose of the film was to encapsulate the real rather than to create a deeply moralising commentary on the blunders of the Nazis. For instance, rather than provoking judgment by depicting every one of Hitler's crimes, the F
  15. No, I am pretty sure this is the internet.
  16. According to Livy, the first Bacchanalia (effectively the earliest orgy) that included both genders to partisipate, was held in 188 BC
  17. Click here for a virtual tour of Rome and her Imperial monuments. It includes the best reconstructions of the Baths of Caracalla that I have ever seen.
  18. Coliseum tunnels. Forum. Trajan's Market. The Appian Way. Enjoy...
  19. So who exactly are judging the contest?
  20. Excellent film! The fact that Hitler himself can be seen through a lens of philanthropy and is humanised (but not justified) is almost astounding achievement. Seeing Hitler as a crushed individual
  21. 'Ouch!' -Spencer Perceval. Ewwwwwww...
  22. I must admit that I have been proven wrong about my views on the Roman perception of the world's shape; I have, in my possession, conclusive proof that the Romans believed the world to be globe-shaped: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s1552.html The coin shown in the above link depicts victory standing triumphantly on a globe
  23. How scholarly do you want the essays to be? Would we need to submit a bibliography for example?
  24. Sto lat! Na zdrowie ...or Happy Birthday!
